System Overview

For concrete floors exposed to weather, external traffic and seasonal temperature variation, coating systems must provide UV stability, moisture tolerance and abrasion resistance. Exterior floor paints for concrete surfaces are specified for walkways, yards, patios and forecourts where internal-only coatings would degrade under sunlight and rainfall.

The EVEREST Everflor range within this collection includes single pack water-based acrylic, epoxy and chlorinated rubber technologies formulated for external use. These systems support light to medium duty environments, offering practical refurbishment solutions for sound existing coatings and prepared concrete substrates.

Acrylic and chlorinated rubber systems prioritise UV stable colour retention and ease of application. Epoxy options provide increased chemical and oil resistance where light vehicular use or occasional contamination is expected.

Suitable Substrates & Surface Preparation

Concrete must be structurally sound, clean and free from laitance, moss, algae, oil contamination and loose material. Mechanical abrasion or pressure washing may be required to remove surface contamination and provide a suitable key.

Moisture content should be assessed prior to coating. External slabs are frequently subject to ground moisture and weather exposure. While acrylic and chlorinated rubber systems are generally more tolerant than high build internal epoxies, saturated substrates can still compromise adhesion.

Previously painted floors may be overcoated where the existing coating is well adhered and compatible. Failing or flaking coatings must be removed, and edges feathered to avoid telegraphing through the finish.

Surface texture should be considered where slip resistance is required. Anti-slip aggregates can be incorporated depending on system type and application method.

Performance Characteristics & Limitations

Single pack water-based acrylic floor paints provide good UV resistance and colour stability under external exposure. They are suitable for foot traffic and light vehicular use such as domestic garage forecourts. Film build is moderate, and abrasion resistance is appropriate for light to medium duty environments.

Chlorinated rubber systems offer rapid drying characteristics and good adhesion to prepared concrete and previously coated surfaces. They perform well in external conditions and allow phased application where access restrictions apply.

Epoxy systems provide improved abrasion resistance and enhanced chemical and oil tolerance compared with single pack alternatives. However, standard epoxy coatings may exhibit surface discolouration under prolonged UV exposure. Their rigid film also requires stable substrates with minimal movement.

Across all technologies, these coatings are not intended for heavy industrial traffic, constant high-load vehicle turning or severe mechanical abuse without system upgrade. Performance is directly linked to preparation quality and environmental conditions during application.

Internal vs External Considerations

This collection is designed specifically for external use. UV exposure, rainfall, freeze–thaw cycling and temperature fluctuation are central performance considerations. Acrylic and chlorinated rubber systems are typically preferred where long-term colour stability is important.

Application should be scheduled to avoid rainfall during curing. Surface temperature and ambient conditions influence drying times and final film formation.

In partially covered areas such as external service corridors or open-sided structures, epoxy systems may be considered where additional chemical resistance is required, provided UV exposure is managed.

Selection Guidance & When to Specify Alternatives

Exterior floor paints in this collection are suited to light to medium duty outdoor environments including walkways, patios, yards and garage forecourts.

For predominantly pedestrian areas with limited vehicle use, single pack acrylic systems provide practical and economical protection. Where faster drying and improved adhesion to aged surfaces are required, chlorinated rubber coatings may be appropriate.

As traffic intensity increases or where oil and fuel exposure is more frequent, upgrading to higher build epoxy systems is recommended to achieve improved durability and resistance.

If the area is subject to heavy commercial loading or sustained industrial traffic, specification should move beyond standard external floor paints to dedicated heavy duty industrial systems.

Correct assessment of substrate condition, exposure level and traffic pattern should determine final system selection.
